Laparotomy sponges (Lap sponges) are sterile medical devices used during the closing of a wound in the surgical procedure. They are designed to absorb blood and fluids, apply pressure or traction, protect tissues and separate structures, and are generally used for a temporary purpose.
The lap sponges adjust very easily and prevent potential contamination of the wound. They are specifically used for surgical procedures involving the abdominal region. They are intended to keep the surgical site free of body fluids like blood, and also help the surgeon in getting a clear view and a clean workspace.
The material used in the manufacture of lap sponge is 100% cotton and this material ensures a high level of absorbency and softness. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes. They are either sterile or non-sterile. The sterile ones can be applied directly on to the wound but the non-sterile ones are used to soak up fluids when there is no direct contact with the wound. The lap sponges are available as pre-washed or unwashed. The pre-washed option is more effective in absorbing fluids and the most standard choice in surgical procedures.
The lap sponges are available either as X-ray detectable or undetectable form. Sometimes during emergency surgery or in an unexpected change in a surgical procedure, it might so happen that the chances of a lap sponge being accidentally left inside the patient’s body cavity becomes higher, and to prevent this the lap sponges that are X-ray detectable are used for easy recognition or identification. Generally, in the surgical setting, the X-ray detectable lap sponges are preferred. The X-ray detectable sponges have a blue ribbon placed in one of its corners for easy removal.
The sterile lap sponges are packaged in plastic pouches as well as in a tear-open medical grade paper. They are available in various sizes like 25cmx25cm, 30cmX30cm, and 45cmX45cm.
The sterile lap sponges are sterilized with ethylene oxide (EO).
