A thin medical fabric whose weave structure has yarns that are arranged in pairs and overlapped before and after each yarn and keeping them firmly in place, is called as gauze.
The weave structure of gauze is a loose open weave for better stability and absorbency or drainage. Whereas, closely woven gauze provides extra strength and protection.
Gauze is generally used as surgical dressings to cover a variety of wounds. Due to their use as medical dressings, the fabric should not stick to the wound, and hence to prevent this, commonly used material in the manufacture of gauze is cotton.
Gauze dressings are available as sterile or non-sterile either with an adhesive border or without an adhesive border. Other option consists of woven, non-woven, plain, and impregnated. The degree of absorbency varies as per their design whether dry woven or non-woven.
Gauze dressings are easily and readily available wound dressings and are the most commonly used dressings for medical purposes.
Along with covering a wound gauze dressings are also used for cleansing and packing of wounds. They can either be used as a primary or secondary wound dressing. Gauze is highly permeable and comparatively non-occlusive.
Gauze dressings are low-priced and for short-term use. Sterile gauze should be manufactured as per the standards mentioned in the United States Pharmacopoeia.
Most commonly used gauze dressings are available in three types; impregnated, wrapping gauzes and sponges, and comes in sizes of 2×2 and 4×4.
